Keeping a Skin Care Journal – How to Track Your Journey to Healthy Skin

Whether you’re healthy skin concern is acne treatment or anti-aging treatment, nothing makes you feel better about the skin care and healthcare choices that you make more than visible results. And, with the right regimen, you will see results. But like many things in life, you may want to look back later and compare. You also may want to be able to track the changes that you made at different points. What can help you do both of these things? A skin care journal.

What’s a skin care journal?

So what’s a skin care journal? It’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a journal in which you keep both a visual and a written record of how your skin looks and what changes and skin care products you’ve started using to improve it. At the end of the day, it can be a reference for you or a guiding tool for somebody else.

Why would you take the time to keep a skin care journal? There are actually several reasons!

Track Your Results for Motivation: Whether you’re trying to clear up acne-prone skin or reduce the signs of aging on your skin, changes to your skin don’t happen overnight. It’s easy to get frustrated or demotivated if you’re not seeing visible improvement to your skin quickly. However, if you keep a visual record of your results, either week-by-week or month-by-month, you’ll be able to look back and see that changes are happening. Then you’ll find the patience to stay the course until your results reach their peak.

Be Able to See What Changed and What Caused Those Changes: You may find, as you go through your skin care journey, that some changes have a bigger impact than other changes. Those may be a switch in skin care product or they may be lifestyle changes such as getting more sleep. You want to be able to look back and see what worked, what didn’t and what had the biggest impact.

Keep Yourself on Track: Finally, when it comes to skin care, consistency is key. But it’s also easy to get off track. If you’re keeping a healthy skin journal, then you’ll always have a place where you’re responsible for tracking your progress as well as being honest when you commit a “skin care sin” like going to bed without removing your makeup.

What should you track?

So what should you track in your skin care journal? Here are the most important things to make sure that you’re keeping a record of.

What do you look like? Of course, the most important thing that you need to track is what you look like. The better the camera you can use, the more accurate your results will be. But even smartphones have amazing cameras these days, so keeping a visual record shouldn’t be too hard.

What have you noticed? In addition to the actual visual record of your skin, you should make notes. Maybe your photos don’t reveal the reduction in lines around your eyes yet, but you’ve started to notice them. Or maybe you’re still breaking out, but you notice that your blemishes aren’t as deep and severe.

What skin care products have you been using? You’ll obviously want to keep track of what skin care products you use. You may start out thinking that you need a more aggressive acne skin cleanser, but over time you may find that a more gentle acne cleanser is better for you. When something like that happens, you’ll want to make sure to note it.

What Inclusive Health™ practices have you been using? Products aren’t the only things that make a difference in your skin. Diet, hydration, sleep and Cultural Stress™ all impact your skin as well. Be sure to keep track of how effective you’ve been at eating your water, keeping an antioxidant rich diet and de-stressing your life.

What may have impacted your skin? At any time, there may be other factors that could impact your skin’s health. Did you forget to wash your makeup off? Were you exposed to unexpected sun or UV damage? Did you go to a swimming pool and have your skin dried out by any chemicals? If something has happened during the week, be sure to note it and its potential impact on your skin.

What’s the best journal method for you?

Finally, keep in mind that a journal doesn’t need to be a paper booklet. Pick a format that’s best for you. That may be a YouTube posting, a blog, even an Instagram account. Get creative and think about what format will work best for you in recording your skin care journey.

Remember, like anything else in life, skin care and healthy skin aren’t overnight changes. They’re a journey, and journeys are always best when they’re recorded!
