Five Tips for Using Self Tanner

If you live in a warm climate, then right now most of the country is jealous of you. While they’re battling cold, wintery weather, you’re still enjoying the beach! However, both of you have reasons to use a self-tanner instead of natural rays. For the people in the winter climates, there just isn’t any opportunity to hit the outdoors and get an all-over glow. But for both climates, UV rays damage the skin quickly. Even if you’re using appropriate sun protection, your skin may still be paying a price. A self-tanner is a great way to get a summer glow in the winter no matter where you live. Just be sure to follow these five rules so that you don’t end up looking blotchy.

Test, Test, Test!

The most important rule for self-tanning is to make sure that you patch-test your self-tanner on a small area of skin before you apply it to your entire body or face. Once your skin has changed color, it won’t go away until the un-darkened skin deep in your dermis makes its way to the epidermis. Avoid being stuck an unnatural color of orange for weeks or even months by testing your self-tanner on a smaller area of skin that’s easy to conceal!

Exfoliate Before You Self Tan

Dead skin cells absorb more tanning fluid than healthy, hydrated skin cells do. That’s why it’s important to use a body scrub before you self tan your body or an exfoliating facial wash before you self tan your face. By removing any patches of dry or dead skin cells, you’ll help make sure that your self-tanner applies evenly and then darkens into an even color shade. If you’re tanning your entire body, be sure to pay extra close attention to areas where dry skin tends to build up, like your elbows and your knees.

Moisturize Before You Self Tan

No, your self-tanning liquid does not count as a moisturizer! As we mentioned above, you want to make sure that you have as few patches of dry skin on your body or face as possible before you self-tan to avoid getting saturated dark spots. Apply an oil-free moisturizer (an oil-based moisturizer may break down the consistency of some self-tanners) to your entire body or face before applying tanning lotion. Again, pay extra attention to elbows, knees and other areas that are prone to dry skin .

Use a Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion

You want to make sure that you get an even application for a smooth, consistent color. That means making sure that you apply your self-tanning lotion evenly and consistently. It’s easier to see your tanner and its application if you’re using a tinted tanning lotion. While actual color in the self-tanning lotion won’t impact the color that it creates on your skin, it will help you make sure that you apply the product evenly for the most professional and natural looking end result.

Take Extra Precautions with Your Dry Skin Areas

Even with exfoliation and moisturizer, your dry skin areas may be prone to being darker because they absorbed more tanning lotion than the rest of your body did. After you apply the self-tanner, take a damp cloth and blot away any excess lotion from knees, ankles, elbows or anywhere else that you consistently get dry skin.
