Herbal Remedies That Have Been Proven To Relieve Tinnitus – Six Of The Best

Tinnitus can be an incredibly debilitating condition. It is commonly experienced as an incessant whistling, buzzing or ringing in the ears – and can be brought on  by a number of factors such as head trauma, prolonged exposure to loud noise or ear infections . There is still ongoing discussion within the medical community about whether or not tinnitus can actually be cured – with one side saying that there is no permanent cure for tinnitus and that only relief can be sought whilst there are others that stridently assert that there is a permanent cure for tinnitus. Regardless of which theory you subscribe to there is some consensus when it comes to the issue of herbal treatments in that it is widely accepted that certain herbs can help bring about tinnitus relief .

The herbs that are most frequently sought for the purpose of tinnitus relief include:

•    Melatonin  – is a naturally occurring substance . It has been shown in clinical trials to have a specific positive effect on our sleep-wake cycles . Ingesting Melatonin can therefore help in reducing the insomnia, irritability, tiredness or anxiety   that can be brought on by disrupted sleep patterns – all of which will only act to aggravate tinnitus. Nightly melatonin doses of 3 mg have been shown to help tinnitus sufferers who experience difficulty sleeping

•    Gingko Biloba – has been a mainstay of Chinese medicine for over 5000 years and has been used to treat a number of maladies . It is widely available and has been shown to help those who suffer from tinnitus. The dosage is typically 120-150 mg a day .

•    Zinc – is often referred to as a “super mineral” and many clinical studies have shown Zinc to be an extremely powerful immune stimulant and antioxidant . Specifically as far as tinnitus is concerned clinicians believe that up to 31% percent of the patients they see that are suffering from severe tinnitus are zinc-deficient . Zinc supplementation has been shown to reduce tinnitus levels .

•    Lesser periwinkle (Vinca minor) – is a flower which has been used to treat many medical conditions. It contains a substance called vincamine, which has had success in decreasing tinnitus symptoms. Vinpocetine, a semi-synthetic derivative of vincamine, also has contributed to the lessening of the severity of tinnitus .

•    Hawthorn – has been suggested by The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Natural Remedies as a tinnitus remedy due to it being a tonic for the circulatory system.

•    Black Cohosh – has been listed by both The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Natural Remedies and The Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants as a herbal remedy for blood congestion or pressure in the head – conditions which will only serve to aggravate tinnitus .

Whilst not herbal supplements, both Vitamin B12 and Vitamin A have also been shown to bring about an improvement for those suffering from tinnitus .

My experience has suggested that herbal supplements alone will not be enough to bring about a permanent cessation of your tinnitus but that they certainly rank highly amongst the tinnitus remedies that are on offer .
